The Heart of Texas Urban Gardening Coalition (HOT UGC) has begun to plan for the 2010 Day of Service and we would like to invite you to apply to host a group at the site of your school, church or organization. Last year we had great success in recruiting almost 1000 volunteers that served at 12 different sites. This year the Coalition has decided to work more closely with a smaller number of sites and increase the amount of educational activities provided at each site.
The HOT UGC is still working out details for the day and we would like to include you in the process. We decided that we would like to expand the focus of the day only from direct garden activities to also include more on nutrition. We decided that we would like to have three sets of activities.
- The service primarily focused on doing work in the garden, with more education on gardening.
- Education on nutrition, gardening, eating healthy on a budget, food stamp or other federal program outreach. We are hoping to develop a festival.
- A healthy cooking demonstration, where people could eat the healthy food being prepared. (The site does not necessarily need a kitchen to qualify to be a site.)
Contact Bethel Erickson (firstname.lastname@example.org) or Matt Hess (email@example.com) for an application for the day. Please fill out this application and return it to me by 5:00pm September 25th, 2010.
