February UGC Meeting Minutes.

February 17, 2011- Mayborn Museum

  • 6:06 Meeting is called to order
  • Intros, signing out of seeds, and the March Calendar
  • Garden reports-
    • Lake Shore Baptist is up for a grant for 20 fruit trees, but after an online voting forum beginning April 15th
  • Financial Update- $5855.48 in the bank
    • Most already allocated to existing gardening initiatives/harvest celebration – give your receipts to Bethel
    • Bethel applied for a grant from Sodexo – will know the results by the end of February
  • Business old & new:
    • Farmer’s Market Permit ordinance-
      • Felix Landry presented on this and spoke about the ways in which the city is supporting this—explained ordinance which outlines site plan for what a farmers’ market should look like within city limits. The ordinance passed, making it easier to sell processed goods, due to overwhelming support from the coalition and the community.
    • Waco Tribune Food Access Article features the UGC
    • Corner Store is being built next to the family health center between 17th and 18th streets
    • Project mapping obesity and food access in McClennan County is being undertaken
    • Stepping out Waco is coming up
    • Walk Across Texas – Texas Agrilife Extension event on the 17th
  • Board Elections – Vernon Clark steps down as President to become an at large member and Charles Conkin becomes President, in accordance with the bylaws.
    • Chris McGowen is new VP
    • Trey Crumpton is new Secretary/Treasurer
    • Jen Adams is a new at large member
    • Tasha Moore is a new at large member
  • Membership Fees instituted – Executive Director needs to discuss with treasurer when they are actually charged
    • $5 per year for individuals
    • $25 per garden
    • $ charged for grantwriting services
    • $50 for for-profit businesses
  • Harvest Celebration in conjunction with Global Youth Service Day, April 15-17
    • Plan to build on model from last year, including bussing kids to sites and cooking outdoors with chefs for demonstrations
    • Some kind of art project, like a garden mural; kids will get strawberry plants for participating
    • Some kind of non-school event on Saturday for kids above the 8th grade and adults, with a community potluck Saturday night
  • Future Plans
    • Waco CDC is willing to give public land to UGC for people to garden who do not have their own, Sanger Heights in north Waco (1 acre), with room for more
    • Begin gardening with Communities In Schools, but not in their after school program
    • Talking to city council members about water for community gardens
    • Meeting with Waco ISD superintendent to possibly set up a headquarters in Wiley High School
    • Firefox Fridays workshops – cheese making and rainwater harvesting
    • Next UGC meeting at Mayborn Museum March 17th at 6:00pm
