Waco, TX – The Heart of Texas Urban Gardening Coalition (UGC) is gathering youth from across Waco who have participated in school and community garden clubs, for the third annual Harvest Celebration, at Lake Shore Baptist Church & Garden on Friday, April 15, as part of the Global Youth Service Day.
Vegetables planted on MLK Day and throughout the spring will be harvested and shared, allowing gardeners to reflect on the progress of the garden. Students who have participated in garden clubs across the city will be recognized. A light meal of garden-fresh salad and soup harvested from the collective gardens will be prepared by Community Health Corps members and served to all in attendance.
Beginning at 3:30pm, youth will gather at the church for a variety of activities, including an art activity hosted by the Waco Arts Initiative, composting demonstrations by the Heart of Texas Master Composters, cooking and grilling demonstrations by area chefs, and Zumba!
The reception and award ceremony will begin at 4:15pm and feature stories from the youth about working in the garden throughout the year, as well as a few words from our guest speaker, Larry D. Groth, Waco City Manager.
UGC will also be partnering with the McLennan County Hunger Coalition to collect canned goods and promote the Spring Onto Summer Food Drive happening on April 29. The Urban Gardening Coalition and all of its community partners truly hope that you and your garden friends can be a part of this celebration of garden goodness!
